I wanted to start a business that would enhance my spirit and
limit my impact on the environment. I am a Botanist, wife, mother, and an
avid recycler. Somehow I had to combine all this to make a viable business and
remain somewhat sane (sane is a rather loose term in our house). I have
always loved and collected old blue canning jars and one evening I broke three
in one sitting. I took my broken shards and put them on a shelf for later
use. What and how to use these glass shards….. were both unknown to me at the
time.
One year later I decided to throw them in the rock tumbler, I still
hadn’t decided what to do with them but this was progress. What came out of the
tumbler was beautiful glass and a beautiful idea. I could work from my
home and make beautiful earrings from recycled and broken glass. Friends
and family loved them and Tumbled Trinkets was born. All the things that were
important to me fell into place and it all came together from old broken jars. One of my favorite style of earrings is the Cascading Catkins because the first pair I ever made was created with the old canning jars I accidently broke. I loved the blue color and the fact that I could take something that most people would discard and turn it into something beautiful. I also loved the recycled Glass Pins as they are so whimsical and fun. They always generate great smile and conversation anywhere I go (the Turkey Pin is one of my favorites as he is so dorky that you can't help but love him).
I
use recycled materials in my business such as 100% PCW paper, reused envelopes
and packing material. Don't be surprised if your earrings arrive in an Altoids
box or a quaint little bag made from old discarded books! An extra block of wind power was purchased to cover business activities
and I encourage you to see if renewable energy is available in your area.
Enjoy.
