Description

The Minnesota state bird is the common loon (no, it's not the mosquito) and when I was a child our neighbor gave my sister and I a loon ornament. I grew up in Rochester, MN which is famous for the geese at Silver Lake and I had never seen a loon (they live a little further up North in the frozen tundra). Even as a child I loved the cleverness of this ornament, the body is a peach pit and the head is a cherry pit. How truly clever is that!! Who sits around eating cherries and peaches and decides to make a loon out of them....my kind of person that's who. For years I've been saying I was going to make them so I started hoarding peach and cherry pits. People look at you funny when you do these kind of things but it gives them something to talk about.

I love to ask people what they think the loon is made of and it's very entertaining to see what they come up with. When someone from the Midwest comes into my Idaho shop and see's them they seem to be transformed to another place and they always buy the loon. For me this ornament is full of nostalgia as I no longer live in Minnesota but my heart still returns to the childhood memories of Christmas's past. Happiest of Holidays!
